Deputy Prime Minister who is also Minister of Education has requested all citizens to give their wise opinion regarding the probability whether it is compulsory for the SPM candidates to pass the English subject or not in order for them to receive the full certificate of SPM. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that the responses from all group of people are vital for the Minsitry of Education to observe and make further research on this matter.
English has became a big issue in our country Malaysia since the government introduced the teaching of Mathematic and Science in English. This time the issue of whether to make compulsary for SPM candidates to pass English for them to get full certificate of SPM. The current situation is even though SPM candidates fail the English subject, they are still qualified to have the full certificate.
The worry is, if they can still have full certificate without passing the English subject, it is afraid the candidates will not work hard to get a good grade for English, and the consequence is the level of the English among our students will drop. They might be not working seriously to pass the English because they know, even though they fail the subject, they still get the full certificate.
English is still important, but it does not mean that we put our National Language at the second place. There are efforts to improve the National Language. There are still a lot of books written in Bahasa Melayu. People still speak Bahasa Melayu, it compulsory to use National Language in Parliaments and State Assembly as well as in the Court.
Don't worry, Bahasa Melayu is the greatest in our country and Bahasa Melayu is starting to spread in other countries. We proud of our National Language. In the mean time we still must improve our English.
Proud to be Malaysian!
