When something happens, it works both ways; pros and cons (disclaimer: it may not in all circumstances). But in the case of the rumors that WhatsApp will introduce voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service, users will smile (pros) but telecommunications operators will start worry (cons).
The intention to offer VoIP was announced by WhatsApp’s co-founder and chief executive Mr Jan Koum at the recently held Mobile World Congress 2014. To say this is a surprising announcement, The Author does not think so. Logically, that what a company supposed to do - moving forward and provide more and better services.
On the other hand, telcos will be very much worried with this announcement. Telcos' SMS services already suffer loss due to WhatsApp messaging service popularity. If WhatsApp's VoIP becomes reality, what will happen to convention voice over services provided by telcos?
We hope WhatsApp VoIP will be better service than existing VoIP (if it becomes a reality).
