Have you ever heard about men or boys who have been castrated for purposes ie: to perform a specific social function. This is one of the weird cultures around the world known as "Eunuchs". Eunuchs were group of men or boys who went through a surgical process to remove the penis and testes. So do we call them men or what?
This strange tradition is believed to exist in Ancient Middle East, China, Ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium as well as in India. Eunuchs have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures such as: courtiers or equivalent domestics, treble singers, religious specialists, government officials, military commanders, and guardians of women or harem servants.
In China for example, some men became Eunuchs as a mean of gaining employment in the Imperial service. While in India, Eunuchs was frequently employed in Imperial Indian palaces as servants for female royalty, and often attained high-status positions in Indian society.
Seriously, even after I found about this strange culture, I still can't believe this kind of culture exist among the people of the world. It was a scary tradition but there were some men who were willing to do so just to gain something as what happened in China. There is a claim that the so called "Eunuchs" are still exist until this day.

it seems that they performed castrated so that they won't have the chance to mess around with the ladies in the imperial..

ReplyDeletedang, the whole darn process sound like a hell of pain! why la those ppl still wish to go thru all that. there's a whole bunch of bonus of being a REAL man, if I was granted a wish, I'd choose to be a man for a lifetime. not that I'm complaining on being a woman, but hey.. men suffer less fuss with their..err.."thing" .(or so I thought hahaha)
ReplyDeleteback in the ancient time in mid east country, men who were found guilty of rape cases were castrated as a part of the "hudud" punishment. now..that sounds reasonable.
