Google Celebrates 40th Anniversary of The Rubik's Cube

It was around 2004/2005 when I established the interest of solving Rubik's Cube. It started with one of good friends of mine. If I am not mistaken he started to play and learn solving Rubik's Cube in year 2002/2003 when we were in the high schools.

There are few of us started to learn how to solve Rubik's Cube at that time. All were and are still good friends of mine. You know who you are buddies. Rubik's Cube refers to the 3x3x3 cube originally invented by its inventor. And today, besides 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube, there are other size of cubes including 2x2x2 cube, 4x4x4 cube and 5x5x5 cube. And me, I can only solve the 2x2x2 and 3x3x3.

Today, via its doodle, Google is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Rubik's Cube. Rubik's Cube is one of the most extra-ordinary puzzle ever invented in the world. It has its own fans, its own admirers, those who value and appreciate the art of Rubik's Cube.

In 1974, a young Professor of architecture in Budapest (Hungary) named Erno Rubik created an object that was not supposed to be possible. His solid cube twisted and turned - and still it did not break or fall apart. With colourful stickers on its sides, the Cube got scrambled and thus emerged the first “Rubik’s Cube”.

Rubik's Cube was a very popular toy in 1980. Surprisingly, in actual fact it is still popular until these days. World Cube Association assumes responsibility to govern for Rubik's Cube competition. The current world record for single solving of Rubik's Cube held by Mats Valk from Netherlands in Zonhoven Open 2013 with the record of 5.55 seconds!

2014 marked 40th Anniversary of the Rubik's Cube. It is fun (and frustrating) toy. You got to learn to solve Rubik's Cube in order to make it fun instead of frustrating. Rubik's Cube is not only an invention. It is not only a toy or a puzzle. Rubik's Cube has its own philosophies.

Erno has always thought of the Cube primarily as an object of art, a mobile sculpture symbolizing stark contrasts of the human condition: bewildering problems and triumphant intelligence; simplicity and complexity; stability and dynamism; order and chaos.

I remember those old time when I learned Layer by Layer method to solve the Rubik's Cube. It was very difficult at the very first time. But then you will improve. It took time. Good things usually took some times to be achieved or accomplished. Even Rubik's Cube took time to become a popular toy.

    1. I tried the F2L method. But it is very difficult and it is hard to remember all permutations of F2L method. Layer by Layer is very basic and easy. That's the reason up till these days I still stuck with layer by layer method :(
